Street wear and urban clothing originated from fashion trends made popular by rappers and hip hop stars in America.  As the fashion trend grew these popular music artists found that there was a huge demand for this kind of clothing and that they could influence what people wore and what became popular.  Therefore it only made sense that some popular rappers then began to create their own urban fashion labels.  Many of them have come and gone, but a few of them have had huge success.  Here are just five well-known rappers who have ventured into fashion design.

Jay-Z – Rocawear - Jay-Z’s clothing line Rocawear rakes in an impressive $700 million a year for the already hugely successful rapper.  The clothing label was co-founded by Jay-Z and his long-time friend Damon Dash who also co-found Roc-A-Fella Records with the high-flying rapper.  Rocawear produces all sorts of clothing from fur coats to handbags, loungewear to sandals and socks, and even has lines for children and juniors.  It’s hardly surprising that Beyonce and Jay-Z are one of the highest earning celebrity couples in the world.

Pharrell Williams – Billionaire Boys Club/Ice Cream - Pharrell Williams collaborated with successful fashion icon and clothing label owner Nigo to produce not one but two successful clothing brands.  The premium street wear retailer is true to its name with t-shirts in the range costing up to £100 and jeans costing up to £250.  The brand originally concentrated solely on menswear but has recently launched a new girls’ brand called the Billionaire Girls Club.

Kanye West – DW - Kanye West’s affair with the fashion industry has been short-lived so far.  West's women’s clothing brand DW was named after his late mother and first launched in 2011.  The new line was eagerly awaited at the Paris Fashion Weed in 2011 and 2012 but sadly didn’t make a great impression.   However in an interview earlier this year Kanye assured his fans that he will indeed return to fashion design in the near future, so watch this space.

Lil Wayne – Trukfit - Trukfit is the clothing line owned by American rapper Lil Wayne and inspired by street wear and skateboarding fashion.  Trukfit debuted in January 2012 and has recently expanded to include a line of women’s wear.  Lil Wayne came up with the name for his clothing brand from a childhood experience.  When he was younger a truck used to drive round his neighbourhood selling replica clothing and people wearing the fake clothes would then have “you got on the truck fit” shouted at them in the street.  Lil Wayne named his brand Trukfit to finally make Trukfit clothes cool.

P.Diddy – Sean John Clothing Inc - Sean John Clothing Inc was founded in 1998 and is still going strong 15 years later.  So successful was the fashion label that P.Diddy was awarded Men’s wear designer of the year award in 2004 by the Council of Fashion Designers of America.  The long established brand sells outerwear, suits, boys clothing, accessories, fragrances, denim and more.
